Influence
One could argue that simply viewing a theme 15 years ago couldn’t possibly influence the web design of today. One might be right. But one should remember to never underestimate the power of the Hot Dog Stand theme.
During the time this theme was developed, designers had not quite made it into the software stage, at least not to the extent that they should have. Most software “design” was an afterthought of the programmer. This way of thinking has stuck with many web developers who grew up in the Hot Dog era. Even though most programmers have no business touching anything having to do with the design of anything, it’s this upbringing that makes them think it’s OK.
This is why we see sites that have very useful functionality, but very terrible design and user interface. It’s this same mentality at play today, the mentality reinforced by one theme – you guessed it, Hot Dog Stand.
As programmers, seeing this theme is the worst thing that could have happened to designers. This theme only solidified the fact that designers were not needed, just throw some buttons on the screen and a few colors et voila! I too have trouble admitting some days that I need a designer for my programs, and I blame it on this theme.
